Peter, Paul and Mary, the iconic American folk trio, have been part of music culture with songs like “Leaving on a Jet Plane” and “Puff the Magic Dragon” for more than half a century.
Now, a magical pre-Revolutionary War farmhouse in Connecticut where the late singer-songwriter and activist Mary Travers lived from 1966 until her death from leukemia in 2009 has gone on the market for $949,000.
The seller is the daughter of the folk icon, Alicia Travers.
Built in 1730, the property is where Mary “found peace, quiet and inspiration,” said listing broker Laura Ancona, of William Pitt-Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty.
The charming four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is at 70 Limekiln Road in Redding. It comes with a swimming pool and gardens, and is spread over 2.05 hectares. Measuring 2,323 square feet, the farmhouse features details such as wide-plank floors, exposed beams and two original fireplaces.
There is also a wonderful beamed-room addition, built in 1991, with vaulted ceilings, a stone fireplace, built-in bookshelves and French doors leading to ‘secret gardens’.
A sunlit kitchen boasts beamed and vaulted ceilings along with a soapstone sink, breakfast nook, butler’s pantry and plenty of built-in appliances.
Upstairs, there is a second-floor master bedroom suite with a fireplace, a bathroom and a walk-in closet. French doors lead to a wisteria covered porch overlooking a waterfall and koi pond.
A top floor hosts three additional bedrooms and a shared hall bathroom.
Outside, the gardens feature perennial flowers, such as roses and peonies, and mature trees, including an apple and cherry tree.
There’s also a one-bedroom guest house and what’s known as the “tiny house” — a one-room structure with a fireplace and vaulted ceilings where friends came to camp, hippie-style, in earlier decades, Ancona said.
