I retired from work and spent all my time building giant sculptures of everyday objects ‘out of this world’

Meet the man who builds oversized versions of everyday household items – including a three-prong plug, wrench and pencil sharpener.

Steve Wainwright, 61, said it was his retirement from the ambulance service that first prompted him to take on some ‘creative’ building projects.

Duct tape, three-prong plugs and lipsticks are just a few of the standard everyday items the former electrician has expanded into in the past year.

Steve, of Stanground, Cambs, said: “I felt a bit lost. I’ve always really enjoyed engineering, building and DIY and I can do anything.”

Inspiration struck Steve when a long spell of rain prevented him from “going out to play” on one of his many building projects in the garden.

He said: “I looked at my tape measure and thought, ‘I wonder if I can build this ten times its size?’

Steve said it was 10 times bigger than it was “easy math”.

In no time at all, the creative craftsman had fashioned a stunning table-sized tape measure complete with giant retractable tape.

Soon after, Steve’s wife set him another challenge and asked him to build her lipstick ten times his size, which he duly obliged.

Since then, Steve has gone on to build ten giant versions of everyday objects, such as pencils and pencil sharpeners.

Many of his creations have fascinated passers-by who have spied them from the path as they pass his garage.

Steve said: “Mums and dads bringing their kids to school are looking and going, ‘Oh my god, what’s going on?’

While people’s reactions are generally very positive, Steve has noticed a particular way in which men and women tend to respond.

“Men say, ‘Wow! This is out of this world!’ [and] women go ‘What are you going to do with this? Where will you put it?’.

“They’re kind of cracked into little gaps around the house.”
