When baker Amy Gastman was hiring for a baking assistant and barista, she was inundated with applications. But some stood out – for the wrong reasons.
London-based Gastman, owner of vegan bakery Eat by Amy, criticized potential Gen Z employees for their unprofessional resumes and emails, which listed being a Harry Styles fan or having a “weird summer” as accomplishments or apparent ability.
“Applications from Gen Z included things like the odd summer, being Harry Styles’ number one fan, being adept at getting tickets to sold-out concerts, an apathy for work,” the millennial baker told Newsweek.
“One person even included that they’re rubbish at baking even though the job is for a baker’s assistant.”
Taking to TikTok to share the discarded apps with her shocked audience, Gastman joked that she needed “a translator” in order to understand the references and reasoning behind Gen Z resumes.
A 23-year-old applicant emailed Gastman with her resume, noting that she is an “avid Harry Styles fan with a superpower of being able to manage to get tickets to a concert of sold” – no less “at face value”.
Meanwhile, others included smiley faces in brackets, googly faces and rude sentences without punctuation.
“Brain wine on a CV is crazy,” commented one bemused viewer.
“Looks like they just stopped teaching spelling and grammar in schools,” said another. “They’re out there and they’re wrong every time.”
“They’re really writing like a dating profile,” joked someone else.
“As a millennial, excited to hear that I have job security for many years to come,” one person said.
“Is that true?” wrote another surprised TikTokker.
Gastman was mostly surprised by the lack of capital letters, to which Gen Z viewers argued that lowercase letters look “cooler.”
“I don’t need your resume to be cool,” Gastman replied.
Meanwhile, others saw the humor in some of the apps.
“They are so frivolous I love it lmao,” one user commented.
“As a millennial manager, I’m calling summer girl for an interview immediately,” added another.
“That’s not what I want when you’re going to send me resumes and cover letters and whatever,” Gastman said. “I need a level of professionalism.”
