An iconic local property built on an ancient cliff is looking for a new owner.
In Larkspur, Colorado, a house known as “The Rock House,” which looks like a house straight out of “The Flintstones,” has gone on the market for $989,900.
Built in 2000, the 24-year-old mansion is uniquely set around a 45-foot-tall section of “one of Colorado’s beloved 200-million-year-old red rocks,” according to the listing, which is maintained by Keller Williams. Action Realty LLC is the Thayer Group.
“It doesn’t really look like a house, from the outside it looks like a prison,” shared a woman named Karen, who bought the home with her partner Allen, according to an episode of HGTV’s “Ugliest House in America.” in which the residence was presented.
“This house was built by a gentleman our neighbors described as ‘bohemian,'” Allen commented on the episode, adding that “The engineering behind this house is at best a guess and we spoke to an architect. and he said, “Be glad it is still standing.”
The original owner, Allen continued, “built a dirt floor so he could grow himself inside.” As a result of this, and the lack of a basement, the soil in the house is extremely spongy.
The detached residence offers a total of 2,432 square meters of living space spread over four floors and is accessed through double iron front doors topped by a pergola.
Inside, there’s a mudroom, two bedrooms – a guest suite with walk-in closet and upstairs master suite with an electric fireplace – two bathrooms, a kitchen with a wine fridge, a den, an office, laundry and views comprehensive of the surrounding landscape
Also, there are a number of outdoor amenities, including two decks—both accessed from the third floor and one of them split-level—and a large top-floor balcony with an enclosed porch that doubles as a “yoga “fitness/greenhouse, – as the listing describes.Â
