What is Summerween and why retailers are cashing in on summer Halloween parties

All Halloween heads seem to be asking the same question.

When is Summerween? AND what is she

Holiday superfans are not waiting for October 31 to begin this year. They’ve sparked a new holiday trend, and it’s already dominating Pinterest’s DIY idea boards and TikTok’s #foryoupage.

One of the first Summerween videos to go viral was posted by creator Bonnie Barton, who shared a 14-second clip of her Halloween party in early July.

It was a warm summer night. She threw on a witch hat and a long black dress, tied a lantern Piñata, threw a skeleton in her kiddie pool, grilled some pumpkin cheeseburgers and poured herself a glass of fizzy orange fanta.

“Wine, what?” asked a confused voice in the background audio.

“Summerween,” replied a hoarse rumble. “The people of this town love Halloween so much they celebrate it twice a year!”

“Summerween?” repeated the inquisitor. “Something about that seems unnatural.”

Nothing about celebrating “Summer Halloween” feels off unnaturalFor the biggest fans of the holiday – in fact, shoppers are already stocking up on Halloween decor.

Like many #Summerween posts, Barton’s short video immediately received millions of views and thousands of comments. But, something was strange about it.

People began to point out that the summer Halloween celebration is not a new concept. Some referenced the Gravity Falls Summerween episode that aired on the Disney Channel in 2012.

The mystery cartoon series followed the characters through their Summerween adventures, complete with cantaloupes, crackling skulls, spooky Summerween costumes and plenty of shenanigans.

Modern Summerween parties seem a little heavier on decor, as Barton’s extravagant set-up suggests. Hundreds of her followers asked where to shop for their Summerween party decorations.

Barton shared links to her decor on her Amazon storefront. Her favorites include a 5’4″ skeleton, a pumpkin-rimmed tree, and remote-controlled Harry Potter floating candles.

Surprisingly, Amazon has embraced the “Summerween” shopping trends for years. The “Summerween” section of the site is already stocked with fiery t-shirts, tattoos, string lights and other outdoor decorations.

According to a report from USA Today, Halloween shopping has started progressively earlier each year since 2019. This year, Amazon’s Halloween sales peak began to rise in the first week of August.

Amazon isn’t the only retailer cashing in on decorating and buying Halloween costumes this early. A handful of other stores have also jumped on the Summerween gun.

TJ Maxx didn’t wait long to comment on Barton’s clip. “You might be on to something!” The company wrote alongside a pumpkin emoji.

“Are we all having a Summerween party now??” Instacart entered.

Big box brands are known for leaning heavily on the Halloween market in the months leading up to the holiday.

Target’s “Best on the Block” selection promises a variety of “nostalgic favorites, as well as some new twists and flavors” — like whimsical kids’ costumes, candy bags and bowls.

Lowe’s shared its Haunted Harbor decorations in July. The creepy underwater animatronics and sea monsters were inspired by a wave of TikTok videos showcasing the unpredictable nature of the deep sea and horrific marine havoc.

Home Depot also put its sought-after “larger-than-life” skeleton on the shelf this July. The hyper-realistic decoration was first released in 2020 and caused an instant frenzy online with its 12-foot-tall and soul-piercing eyes.

“The Home Depot is excited to share the return of the famous 12-foot Skeleton (popularly known as Skelly), who is back this season for more fun and scares,” said Lance Allen, senior decorative holiday merchandiser at The Home Depot.

It’s uncertain how long Skelly will be available this year, whether Lowe’s will run out of its bad portion of the sea, or whether all the best candy will be cleared out before October 31 rolls around. But there’s nothing to fear – apparently, it’s never too early to start your Summerween shopping.
