My Airbnb rental had ‘evil’ decor – concerned fans say ‘girl run’

It is decor to despair.

Cotton bush. Monkeys hanging from tree limbs. And a dead mounted deer.

Dodgy housewares adorned a now derelict rental property that has been deemed “evil” and “diabolical” for its racially offensive overtones.

Watkins shared disturbing footage of an Airbnb listing to over 2.2 million shocked TikTok users. TikTok / @tasteofmelanin

“Airbnb’s southern core,” wrote Erica Watkins, 23, a beauty content creator, in the closed captions of a buzzing newsletter.

Visuals of the unsightly furnishings drew 2.2 million TikTok views from outraged critics, who condemned the unnamed homeowners for trivializing historically damaging injustices against black Americans.

Cotton practically symbolizes slavery in the US. And the stuffed animals hanging from the trees mimic the many lynchings of black men, women and children.

Many social media viewers saw the monkeys as a passive-aggressive symbol of the many lynching killings of black people. TikTok / @tasteofmelanin

“It’s giving ‘Get Out,'” spat one online viewer, comparing the raunchy visuals to director Jordan Peele’s 2019 race-relations thriller.

“They changed the decor JUST for you boo,” wrote another, admonishing Watkins “a black woman” for the alleged intentional abuse.

“Girl run,” encouraged one worried commenter.

Online, TikTok commenters called the cotton decorations “mischievous” and claimed Airbnb hosts deliberately hung the decorations to offend Watkins. TikTok / @tasteofmelanin

Unfortunately, offensive slurs against particular communities continue to trend.

Several employees at Royall Elementary School in Florence, South Carolina were fired after dressing in stereotypical Mexican clothing and posing as Border Patrol agents during an event on campus last week.

And the ever-controversial “Last Supper parody” during the Olympics’ opening ceremonies – the taboo that featured men in drag – fanned the flames of outrage from faith-based bodies around the world.

“There are 2.4 billion Christians on earth,” tweeted one angry X user, “and apparently the Olympics wanted to loudly declare to everyone outside the gate YOU ARE NOT WELCOME.”

Watkins, too, felt she was persona non grata in the rental apartment.

Gen Z eventually (and safely) left the property — but not before reporting the violations to Airbnb headquarters.Â

“Update,” Watkins wrote in the comments section of her post. “Airbnb contacted and removed the listing.”
